My Recommendations for Wildfire News and Information Sources

The Kincade fire is moving quickly up north. I’ve been following its progress very closely, as I own properties in Healdsburg (but fortunately was not up there at the time of the recent evacuation). Family and many of our friends there have evacuated, and we’re holding our breaths as we await accurate and timely updates.

There are a lot of news sources out there, but I’ve rounded up the sites that I’ve found to be the most helpful without being sensationalistic. It’s good to avoid “nightmare traffic on 101!” and “wildfires swallowing Sonoma!” coverage level, as it only increases anxiety for everyone without being too helpful.

Here are my recommended links:
Sonoma County Incident Map
Best map showing where the fire is burning, containment lines and evacuation zones.

Kincade Fire (California Dept of Forestry & Fire Protection
Regularly updated with the most current fire details, including acres burned and containment percentage.

Fire Weather/National Weather Service

AIRNow: Air Quality Index

The Press Democrat
This media outlet honed its wildfire reporting skills in a high-profile way back in 2017 when the Santa Rosa fires were happening. Its comprehensive and useful coverage continues with the Kincade fire.

KRON 4
Our local news channel ups its game online, and also has a good KRON ON app with live streaming.

Fire responders are doing an amazing job managing evacuations and fighting the fires amidst historically high winds. Stay safe out there and let’s all hope for the best in this very challenging time.

San Francisco has power and isn’t in a fire threat zone. But we are experiencing high winds, so be mindful of downed power lines and trees.
